[Engsub] Lovely Writer Ep.1

Gene, a writer by profession, is one day given a request by his publisher to try his hand at a new type of genre, which is Boys Love. Accepting this new challenge, Gene writes and publishes a Y novel that is well received and becomes incredibly successful. So successful that it even gets made into a BL drama.

Hmmm I liked the first episode ... but those sound effects annoyed me. There were just to many of them . So at some point I just muted the video and only watched it with the subtitles on. I don’t know but I just think , that a good drama doesn’t need so many pointless sound effects to make it seem “ more funny “. :(

I'm BL author myself and Gene felt sooo relatable on sooo many levels I was laughing really hard... :D I love how he was woken up after two hours of sleep... That was so realistic :D :D

I gave up this show because of the overuse of comic sound effects. They gave me headache. Bells, whistles, horns, etc, every each 5 seconds is something too annoying. I really don't understand why they need to do it.

The point here is not about the comedy itself, it is about bad editing and cheap jokes. If you need to add too much sound effects, probably the dialogs are not really funny by themselves.

Instead of creating good dialogs that are really funny and don't need any extra sounds to make you laugh, they just add a lot of random sound effects. The result is a chaotic cacophony, where the effects doesn't add anything to the story. The effects should work in line with the story, not being independent from the narrative. Sometimes it seems that the story follows the background sounds, not the opposite.

This series addresses a lot of very important issues in Thai BL industry, such as romantic rape plots, homophobic casting and pink money. But it is difficult to pay attention to these topics when we have horns and drums making noise all the time.

In my opinion, this series is a wasted opportunity.

Here are some interesting things I found...

Apparently, the version on wetv is an uncut version. The cut version was aired on Channel3 and was reportedly to be more concise and have somewhat better flow, while sacrificing some scenes.

Another fun thing is the after-audition scene. The gay guy who did not passed the audition for being "too gay" as the production team said, was auditioning for the Seme role of Bad Engineer, while Aey/Oy who is also gay but deemed as "feminine on the right level" passed the audition and he was auditioning for the Uke role of the series.... Hmmm maybe that's it? Because when I watched it, the comment on Aey was executed in a less sincere way than the first gay guy. It could still be the heteronormative that came with seme/uke role at play here or there could be something more to why Aey got it, but not ther other guy.

And fun fact: the series that they're making, Bad Engineer. Its thai name is actually literally translated to "Engineer, rough/harsh/hardcore husband." It really imply toxic seme. Could be another parody of rape fantasy in bl/yaoi trope.
